Happy October everyone! I am proud to announce that for the first time, the Scholar of the Month will be a MAN! Gasp! While I am a proud female scholar, and I want to empower all of the other female scholars out there, it is important not to ignore the men who also set great examples for those of us who aspire to be lifelong learners. So, without further ado, I’d like to introduce October’s Scholar of the Month, Jimmy Palmer!
For the past month or so, I have been catching up on the last season of NCIS. Ostensibly, Jimmy Palmer is a side character, but those of us who have grown up on the show know him as much more than that. He has been learning at Ducky’s side for the last 13 years, and what an education it has been. Jimmy is a voracious learner, and will occasionally reveal some class he is taking or auditing on some esoteric subject that happens to be useful to the current case. He has a head for fun facts, and it often comes in handy. So handy, in fact, that Ducky recommends him to join the Sherlocks, and he uses his expertise to assist them in solving cold cases, along with his work at NCIS.
But really, what made me choose him as this month’s Scholar was a particular episode this past season (“Keep Going”), in which Palmer reveals that he has secretly passed the exam to become a full-fledged medical examiner, making him Dr. Palmer. He kept it a secret from everyone because he didn’t want to be encouraged or forced to leave, since there would be no reason to have two full medical examiners working in the same morgue. He says that the reason is that he didn’t want to leave his NCIS family, which is totally true, but I think that there is a second reason. Palmer recognizes what a unique and constant learning opportunity he has, working at NCIS, and he wants to keep gaining the knowledge it provides.
